Single
Regeneration Budget VI (SRB VI)
The Single Regeneration Budget supports
regeneration initiatives to improve the quality of
life of people living in deprived areas by reducing
the gap between have and have-nots.
It supports projects aimed at:
- Improving the employment prospects, education
and skills of local people
- Addressing social exclusion an improving opportunities
for the disadvantaged
- Promoting sustainable regeneration, improve
and protect the environment and infrastructure,
including housing
- Supporting and promoting growth in local economies
and businesses
- Reducing crime and drug abuse and improve community
safety
SRB is delivered through the regional development
agencies – in the Island’s case SEEDA.
More than 900 schemes have been approved nationally,
worth over £5.5 billion.
SRB comes in six annual rounds. The Isle of Wight
Economic Partnership co-ordinates and facilitates
four of those on the Island.
SRB VI - "Pride in
Ryde"
Dubbed ‘Pride in Ryde’, round six of
the Single Regeneration Budget is supported and developed
through the Ryde Development Trust which is itself
an SRB VI funded project. Ryde 2000 runs until 2006
and focuses on projects based in Ryde that are themed
on:
- Learning and employment
- Social inclusion
- Physical regeneration
- Business development
Those projects that
have received funding so far include:
Ryde

people in community-based activity.
Specific aims of the project are:

and community led carnival clubs to increase participation
in carnival events
- Develop and support specific new carnival art
forms including moko jumbies, circus skills, live
carnival music and dance
- Raise the profile of carnivals on the Island
- Improve the quality event management and Health
and Safety management on the Island
- Support the formation of independent Island-wide
Carnival Arts Development trust

Ryde Community Mapping
This project determined the number, extent and
usage of community spaces in Ryde and the organisations
involved in running and maintaining them. This included
current space available and those that will become
available in future years.
The study also provided a comprehensive picture
of the operational activities of those undertaking
community development programmes in Ryde.

Ryde Community Plan
The SRB VI fund is intended to enhance the opportunities
for regeneration by working in partnership with the
Ryde Community Forum and the strategic priorities
identified as part of the original funding bid.
The Ryde Community Plan is a unification of a series
of community projects identified by the community
through public consultation and drawn together in
a cohesive strategy. The plan is community led and
has community support, looking at all aspirations
of Ryde from the short-term right through to long-term.
The project manager will ensure that the Ryde Community
Plan works strategically within the regeneration
framework and will seek and access all other funding
schemes available to enhance the SRB VI work.

Ryde Conservation Area Regeneration
Scheme (CARS)
Many properties in the town have been smartened
up under this project which has increased confidence
in the town and led to extra investment in the area.
The project seeks to extend the conservation area
and provide grant funding to repair and renovate
chosen buildings.
Its three primary aims are:
- Repair the historic building stock
- Restore and improve shop-fronts in the town
- Implement environmental schemes

Ryde Countryside Ranger
The aim of this project is to appoint a Ranger
for Ryde who will maximise the use of the urban fringe
around the town and co-ordinate all environmental
and physical improvement activity in the area.
This will lead to better management, access and
use of these areas and will stimulate a sustainable
community development in green space and open space
projects near to people’s homes.
Conservation and enhancement of the biodiversity
and heritage of areas such as footpaths and other
rights of way will be linked to the development of
public rights of way systems around Ryde.

Ryde Esplanade Study
As part of the Island Regeneration Strategy, a
need for a rolling programme of coastal regeneration
initiatives was identified. With Ryde as the ‘gateway’ to
the East Wight corridor it was deemed important to
get the esplanade working as a welcoming and efficient
entry point.
This project was launched to discover the feasibility
of developing the esplanade as an attractive all-year
destination that offers a range of quality attractions
to meet the needs of both residents and tourists.
In doing this the following aims will be achieved:
- Identify the key issues to be tackled to improve
the appearance and function of the esplanade
- Work with existing businesses and community
interests active on or around the esplanade to
develop joint solutions to these issues
- Identify opportunities for new commercial investment
on the seafront

Ryde Festival and Community
Arts
This project has two broad aims:
- To employ a Ryde Neighbourhood Arts Worker to
deliver arts development in Ryde and to facilitate
the further development of the Ryde Art Works Partnership.
This will create a unique arts festival in Ryde
that stands alone as an event that can be marketed
across the Island, nationally and internationally.
- To facilitate the on-going employment of the
Ryde Festival Co-ordinator and to enable the further
development of the Ryde Arts Festival
This post will establish links and provide a point
of contact for all those wishing to initiate arts
development across Ryde and provide support for securing
funding for community arts development.

Ryde Health Village Feasibility
Study
The Ryde Regeneration Partnership had a concern
about the limited range of health and social care
provided in Ryde. Therefore they proposed the idea
that a health village – supporting a range
of health, social care and sports/leisure activities
with a limited amount of housing and/or retail be
considered.
The aim of this project was to launch a feasibility
study to determine whether such a facility was needed
in Ryde and to pull together the full list of costings
for such a scheme.

Ryde Interchange Feasibility
Study
A design feasibility study was undertaken to consider
development of the area at the landside end of Ryde
Pier. In order to do this properly, funding was sought
to employ a specialist design consultant through
an agency to carry out the work. They would then
consider and promote the most appropriate redevelopment
scheme for this interchange area.
This scheme will help co-ordinate and integrate
all the various modes of transport that currently
use the area. Over two million people use this area
annually and this scheme will develop a programme
to promote the best way to meet these traveller’s
needs.
