Single
Regeneration Budget VI (SRB VI)
The Single Regeneration Budget supports
regeneration initiatives to improve the quality of
life of people living in deprived areas by reducing
the gap between have and have-nots.
It supports projects aimed at:
- Improving the employment prospects, education
and skills of local people
- Addressing social exclusion an improving opportunities
for the disadvantaged
- Promoting sustainable regeneration, improve
and protect the environment and infrastructure,
including housing
- Supporting and promoting growth in local economies
and businesses
- Reducing crime and drug abuse and improve community
safety
SRB is delivered through the regional development
agencies – in the Island’s case SEEDA.
More than 900 schemes have been approved nationally,
worth over £5.5 billion.
SRB comes in six annual rounds. The Isle of Wight
Economic Partnership co-ordinates and facilitates
four of those on the Island.
SRB VI - "Pride in
Ryde"
Dubbed ‘Pride in Ryde’, round six of
the Single Regeneration Budget is supported and developed
through the Ryde Development Trust which is itself
an SRB VI funded project. Ryde 2000 runs until 2006
and focuses on projects based in Ryde that are themed
on:
- Learning and employment
- Social inclusion
- Physical regeneration
- Business development
Those projects that
have received funding so far include:
Ryde
Into Business
The broad aim of this project is to employ a Business
Development Manager to be located within the Ryde
Development Trust offices to drive, facilitate, support
and develop business in Ryde.
In post, this person will support business start-ups
through a mix of counselling, organisational development
and business planning advice. A small grants scheme
will be linked with the IW Lottery and the IW Enterprise
Agency Princes Youth Trust for identified elements
of the business plan. Support and tracking will last
for two years after the business has been started.

Ryde Marina Bowls
The Ryde Marina Bowls Club is situated on the seafront
in Ryde, with two greens and a club house dating
back to 1905. The main aim of this project is to
replace this clubhouse with a building that can remain
open throughout the year, extending the season and
providing an improved facility for bowls development
in the town. The secondary aim is to restart the
Ryde Open Bowls Tournament which will bring a week-long
event for holiday-makers, bringing an increase in
trade for Ryde.
To do this the old clubhouse will be demolished
and replaced with a brand new purpose-built facility.
This will allow for an increase in memberships, men,
ladies and juniors and will also mean better assistance
and facilities for disabled people wanting to enjoy
bowls.

Ryde Paddling Pool Refurbishment
The paddling pool has proved to be a popular facility
but had fallen into relative disrepair in recent
years. The surface had become slippery and there
were cracked and uneven areas in the surrounding
surface. New British Standards decreed that all paddling
pools must be fenced in but this wasn’t the
case here, with ducks and swans from the adjacent
lake using it as their own fresh water bath!
This project was set up to ensure that these problems
were addressed and that the paddling pool is accessible
to all who wish to use it.
In addition to this, further specific aims were
to:
- Provide a secure fenced area that is dog free
- Provide a range of interesting, safe water features
and play equipment
- Provide safer access to the water for young
children
- Add litter bins

Ryde Skills Audit
By first establishing a baseline position of the
skills available in Ryde by creating an audit, all
the key education and training delivery agencies
can be galvanised into working towards one vision
of learning, education and training in Ryde.
The comprehensive skills audit:
- Identifies the current learning opportunities
in the town
- Establishes the skills possessed by those living
and working in Ryde
- Highlights the skills difference between the
most deprived wards in Ryde
- Establishes areas of potential skills development
- Allows a comparison with other towns on the
Island and across the South East

Ryde Women’s Day
Ryde Women’s Day was first organised to offer
a wide range of taster workshops at low cost in Ryde.
It is held at Ryde High School and links with the
Women’s Day held at the Isle of Wight College
and ensures socially isolated women in Ryde can access
a similar event. The taster sessions appeal to those
who may not have the confidence to sign up for a
more structured course. It is open to women aged12+.
The way that the event is structured ensures that
it is a community event, offering publicity to small
local businesses to ensure that as many different
parts of the community can benefit from the day.
With six of Ryde’s eight wards included in
the nation’s top 20 % most deprived, it is
clear that opportunities in Ryde have been limited.
Therefore Ryde Women’s Day was set up with
a range of criteria in place to help those who were
deemed to need it most. These were:
- Keep costs as low as possible to encourage the
target audience to access the event.
- Promotion of the event amongst toddler groups
will enable potential participants to network with
their peers, thereby reducing isolation.
- The provision of a crèche will enable
single parents to participate.
- The planning team are a similar age to the target
group and are therefore in a position to make relevant
decisions which will encourage the right people
to attend.
The event had grown quickly over the previous two
years and Single Regeneration Budget VI funding was
required to enable the Day to continue to support
the socially excluded.

Ryde Young People’s
Inclusion Project
This project aims to help children excluded from
Ryde High School or at risk of exclusion to stay
in school and further their education. Forums and
workshops have been set up for children who are excluded
or at serious risk of future exclusion.
It has proven that even young people excluded from
school still want to learn and to achieve. This has
led to a review of the inclusion policy in several
Island schools and initiatives to allow excluded
pupils to return to school.

of young people in Ryde.

• The recruitment of an Active Communities
Development Officer
• To programme sports activities to minority groups in Ryde
• To train volunteers in the programme

St Thomas Church
St Thomas Church is a Grade II listed building
situated in the Conservation Area of Ryde. Unfortunately,
over recent years, it had fallen into something of
a state of disrepair. This project sought funding
to restore the church and make it a venue for a range
of activities.
Upon completion of the project, the church is to
be handed over to the IW Council who will be able
to use it for a multiplicity of uses including exhibitions,
concerts, meetings and community-led programmes.

Streets Ahead
The cornerstones of the Youth and Community Service
and youth work in general are education, empowerment,
participation and equality of opportunity. Youth
workers in the street are in the ideal place to contact,
inform and influence those young people who might
not normally access services.
The key aim of this project is to develop a comprehensive
street youth-work project in Ryde and, in doing so,
rationalise street youth-work across the Island.
Project objectives:
• To employ a full-time Street Youth Worker
supported by a team of part-time staff
• To contact young people who would not normally attend a youth club and
provide them with access to the Youth and Community Service
• To make contact with young people who may be at risk
• To assist in the development of young people and in the transition from
adolescence to adulthood

Sun Ryders
The Sun Ryders were set up by a group of parents
from the Ryde area in conjunction with professionals
who recognised the need for a range of activities
and opportunities for children with disabilities,
their siblings and parents. The project works to
support families in Ryde who care for children aged
0 – 13 with a disability or developmental delay.
Particular aims are to:
- Reduce isolation and social exclusion for families,
in particular for those with siblings
- Offer a supportive environment for families
to share thoughts and experiences
- Empower parents/carers to access services for
their children
- Enable families, especially with siblings, to
share activities that would otherwise be difficult
to participate in
- Raise awareness about special needs and promote
positive inclusion
- Develop self help and mentoring between parents/carers
- Develop greater partnerships between parents
and professionals
