Single
Regeneration Budget VI (SRB VI)
The Single Regeneration Budget supports
regeneration initiatives to improve the quality of
life of people living in deprived areas by reducing
the gap between have and have-nots.
It supports projects aimed at:
- Improving the employment prospects, education
and skills of local people
- Addressing social exclusion an improving opportunities
for the disadvantaged
- Promoting sustainable regeneration, improve
and protect the environment and infrastructure,
including housing
- Supporting and promoting growth in local economies
and businesses
- Reducing crime and drug abuse and improve community
safety
SRB is delivered through the regional development
agencies – in the Island’s case SEEDA.
More than 900 schemes have been approved nationally,
worth over £5.5 billion.
SRB comes in six annual rounds. The Isle of Wight
Economic Partnership co-ordinates and facilitates
four of those on the Island.
SRB VI - "Pride in
Ryde"
Dubbed ‘Pride in Ryde’, round six of
the Single Regeneration Budget is supported and developed
through the Ryde Development Trust which is itself
an SRB VI funded project. Ryde 2000 runs until 2006
and focuses on projects based in Ryde that are themed
on:
- Learning and employment
- Social inclusion
- Physical regeneration
- Business development
Those projects that have received funding so far
include:
Ryde Development Trust
The trust was set up with one simple aim – to
support the development of a sustainable local
regeneration and community development partnership
delivery agency
within Ryde. With an office and staff based in Ryde, a business
plan for the regeneration activity has been put in
place and the Ryde Development Trust is the delivery
agency for all regeneration in Ryde for the Isle
of Wight Economic Partnership.

Area Investment Framework - AIF
The AIF was promoted by SEEDA as a means to achieve
a better framework for regeneration activity across
the region. The Island was one of five pilot areas
in the South East asked to develop an AIF document
as a mechanism to delivering Economic and Regeneration
Strategies. Through the mapping of socio-economic
trends, the AIF allows the following questions
to be answered:
- What are the key investment requirements
to realise the Island Regeneration Strategy?
- What are the opportunities to bridge the gap between
the investments required and those planned?
It provides a diagnostic tool to support funding
bids and the securing of resources to deliver the
Island Regeneration Strategy, especially from SEEDA.

Creativity for Health and Wellbeing
Creativity for Health and Wellbeing aims to ensure
that people with special healthcare needs and their
associated organisations are included in the arts
and cultural regeneration strategy in Ryde. It delivers the skills and creative support to enable
them to make their own work on their own terms which
can then be displayed or performed at public venues
around the town. The project seeks to demonstrate
the link between creativity and good health and works
with partners at established centres such as Riboleau
(mental health), Shackleton (elderly mental infirm),
Meadowbrook (adult learning disability), SureStart
(families and under5’s), and through voluntary
organisations in Ryde.

Crossways Community Garden Project
This project offers an opportunity to vulnerable
sectors of the community to grow their own fruit
and vegetables. Participants gain gardening skills
and learn about nutritional values. Pride in community-developed
areas will boost pride and self-worth and socially
excluded groups can gain life-enhancing skills. A range of cooking workshops will allow people to
get the most out of the project with gardening knowledge
and enthusiasm shared by those taking part. As well
as the elderly, young people and single parents,
the project also gives opportunities to adults with
learning difficulties and GP referrals.

Electronic Island Vision
This project involves the development of a modular
course to be held at the Isle of Wight College
in order to meet the basic skills requirement
of the
electronic cluster of companies spread across the
Island. The initial focus is based on those companies
in Ryde but research has illustrated that all electronic
Companies have the same skill needs from potential
employees. This course is designed to secure meaningful
employment on the Island for Island residents. The aims of the project are:
- To fulfil the Basic Skills shortage
within the electronic industry
- To establish a range of flexible courses that fit
with the changing needs of the market place
-
To create a partnership between trainers and employers – maintaining
career paths in modern industries

Family Community Learning Programme
There is considerable activity around family learning
currently underway in Ryde. However prior to this
bid there was no strategic plan to link it all
together or to develop and enhance the work for
the future. The aims of the programme are to:
- Raise the profile of learning in
the Ryde community
- Present learning as a family activity to help raise
achievement in schools
- Build the skill levels of the local community to
assist in regeneration
- Provide opportunities for Ryde families to learn
together
- Provide professional parent support in behaviour
management, drug awareness and general parenting
skills
- Build confidence and self esteem within the family
These aims are achieved by offering a range of courses
in schools and community environments developed to
allow as many opportunities to learn as possible.
These will be developed as part of a framework proposal
for a dedicated Family Learning Centre in Ryde and
builds on work carried out by the East Cowes Family
Learning Centre.

Family Support Workers
This project seeks to empower parents and carers
through improving their self confidence and self
esteem and providing opportunities for parents
to access further support, education, learning
and employment. The Ryde Community of Schools has a long history
of partnership work at all levels, most recently
Head teachers have worked together strategically
with the aim of raising achievement and addressing
the issues of deprivation and family instability.
The proposal was set for the employment of three
Family Support Workers and a Family Support Co-ordinator
based in Ryde offering practical support to families
in need of help to promote positive social behaviour
through schools, support groups and opening avenues
of communication to other agencies.

Fresh Start at Haylands Farm
Haylands Farm is a centre for learning and work
education for people with learning disabilities,
and is based
at Haylands on the outskirts of Ryde. The centre
caters for a range of capabilities and provides
90 half-day placements per week for individuals.
Through
working in horticulture and agriculture clients
are able to develop a range of skills at a rate
that
matches their capability in an environment that
is individually designed to support them.
The specific project that Single Regeneration Budget
funding was required for was to fund the egg production
and to further the production of goat’s milk.
The flock of hens was increased from 800 to 1200
and the number of goats doubled from 3 to 6.
Clients are now trained in the management and care
of poultry and goats, providing milk and eggs for
sale to the public, both on and off the premises.
They gain skills including health and safety, food
hygiene as well as valuable social skills.
Over the three years that the funding was organised
for, two full-time and one part-time member of staff
are being employed along with a tutor giving four
sessions each lasting two hours each week, working
with 20 clients and 10 volunteers.
SRB VI funding was required to expand the project
by 50%, making it both viable and sustainable. In
doing this it also provided the chance to increase
the level of training, work experience and job opportunities.

George Street Centre
The Baptist Church has been a landmark in George
Street for over a century. In the last 20 years a
pre-school nursery has been run and a young people’s
club managed on site. As well as this work supporting
the elderly and those with learning difficulties
has been undertaken. Following a serious fire, this project sought to
refurbish the Baptist Church to provide a focal point
for community activity to include a multi-purpose
space for worship and performance.
It will address a number of the needs of those living
and working Ryde and especially the George Street
area by drawing together many of the agencies working
in the statutory and voluntary sectors to offer a
single access point for a wide range of help and
facilities.
