Single Regeneration Budget V (SRB V)

The Single Regeneration Budget supports regeneration initiatives to improve the quality of life of people living in deprived areas by reducing the gap between have and have-nots.

It supports projects aimed at:

  • Improving the employment prospects, education and skills of local people
  • Addressing social exclusion an improving opportunities for the disadvantaged
  • Promoting sustainable regeneration, improve and protect the environment and infrastructure, including housing
  • Supporting and promoting growth in local economies and businesses
  • Reducing crime and drug abuse and improve community safety

SRB is delivered through the regional development agencies – in the Island’s case SEEDA. More than 900 schemes have been approved nationally, worth over £5.5 billion.

SRB comes in six annual rounds. The Isle of Wight Economic Partnership co-ordinates and facilitates four of those on the Island.

SRB V - Island Inclusive

Started in 1998, Island Inclusive funding runs until 2004. SRB V supports a range of projects across the Isle of Wight. They are:

Training for the Disabled

Life opportunities for disadvantaged people and those with a disability aged 16 – 25 will be enhanced by providing training and employment through this scheme. These people do not fit the criteria for classification as disabled as described by Social Services. Therefore the project represents an extension of the No Barriers project which gives an integrated package of training and supported employment to those registered with Social Services.

In practical terms the project will deliver:

  • ICT training using the European Computer Driving Licence Stage 1 as its focus
  • First Aid training
  • Life skills training

The course is delivered in Ryde and also offers a free crèche for all participants.

Training Through Self-Build

The aim of this project is to provide thirteen workers who have a construction industry background but have had no previous structured training, with comprehensive training packages as they build their own homes.

The training provided will cover not only construction skills but also health-related topics – health and safety, first aid, budgeting and ordering, book-keeping as well as site management and communication skills.

As there are thirteen people taking part this also mean that they will be building thirteen affordable family homes.

Vectis Boating and Fishing Club

The Vectis Boating and Fishing Club is believed to be the oldest sea angling club in England, having been formed as the Ryde Working Mans Rowing Club in 1861. SRB funding was sought in order to achieve the following two aims:

• The construction of a new public slipway
• The development of a new clubhouse

The slipway will be on the north side of the harbour car park and will be designated as a public slipway upon completion.

The existing clubhouse hut will be replaced by a larger and more convenient purpose built clubhouse that will have a more efficient use of space and incorporate disabled access.

Wight 2B Heard Co-ordinator

The Wight 2B Heard Conference has proved to be an extremely useful tool in giving young people a democratic voice. However, whilst the conference gives them a chance to express their views to those organisations that make decisions that affect their lives, the outcomes of the conference cannot be fully capitalised upon without the provision of a dedicated co-ordinator.

The co-ordinator will be able to:

• Develop appropriate lines of communication between young people and relevant agencies
• Ensure and maintain appropriate avenues of communication between Wight 2 Be Heard activities and key stakeholder agencies
• Arrange group meetings and workshops to pursue specific topics brought up at conferences
• Ensure young people’s views are followed up
• Promote further involvement in the Wight 2B Heard Conferences
• Promote better links between youth organisations on the Island

Wootton Bridge Help Centre

The need for a community information centre was highlighted in the Wootton Bridge Village Design Statement that forms the basis of the village plan. Both of these were put together with the help of extensive public consultation.

This project included the purchase of two buildings in Wootton which are designed to:

  • Promote village cohesion
  • Provide readily available help and information on a variety of social and community issues
  • Be a centre for the provision of local services
  • Encourage appreciation of the village environment and heritage
  • Promote local businesses

Young Persons Conference

Wight 2B Heard is a group led by young people for a variety of organisations and educational establishments. This group established a need for young people on the Island to feel part of the decision making process. SRB funding was sought in order for a young persons conference to take place in Ryde in March 2000. SRB funding was necessary to kick start the event that will hopefully become sustainable through other means once the project has taken off.

Young people will be brought together on the same platform as the key service delivery agents so that they can have their say in a format that will have some impact. These conferences will give young people a very chance to become part of the decision making process on the Island by facilitating dialogue.

Youth Arts Base

Youth arts development on the Isle of Wight was seen to need a strategic base. The concept of this project evolved from strategic planning over several years and fulfils the requirements identified by the IW Council’s audit of youth arts.

The project has four major aims and objectives:

  • To provide an accessible platform and opportunity for young people and the wider community to be involved in exciting and innovative arts initiatives.
  • To raise the profile of youth arts on the Isle of Wight in a local and regional context
  • To nurture and develop the skills of Island-based young professional artists
  • To increase the number of opportunities for young people and the wider Island community to experience and participate in the arts

The ‘Platform’ can be seen as a central resource of expertise to be drawn upon as well as equipment and instruments.
