Single Regeneration Budget II (SRB II)

The Single Regeneration Budget supports regeneration initiatives to improve the quality of life of people living in deprived areas by reducing the gap between have and have-nots.

It supports projects aimed at:

  • Improving the employment prospects, education and skills of local people
  • Addressing social exclusion an improving opportunities for the disadvantaged
  • Promoting sustainable regeneration, improve and protect the environment and infrastructure, including housing
  • Supporting and promoting growth in local economies and businesses
  • Reducing crime and drug abuse and improve community safety

SRB is delivered through the regional development agencies – in the Island’s case SEEDA. More than 900 schemes have been approved nationally, worth over £5.5 billion.

SRB comes in six annual rounds. The Isle of Wight Economic Partnership co-ordinates and facilitates four of those on the Island.

ACE

ACEThe Action for the Community and Environment (ACE) project developed a major campaign to encourage active citizenship and to raise awareness as to the benefits of volunteering. Volunteers and resources are assigned via this initiative to a wide range of local community groups. Specific targets include:

• Local businesses through employee volunteering schemes and a resource exchange bank
• Young people via schools
• Individual citizens

CCB

This project (Community Capacity Building) was designed to build capacity within the voluntary sector, enhancing the management skills of voluntary sector organisations that are currently involved with, or wish to participate in, local regeneration programmes. This made sure that voluntary initiatives could be co-ordinated in a new way, reducing duplication and maximising resources.

Coming Home

The aim of this project was to encourage Island youth to obtain higher qualifications and then return to the Island, investing their skills in the local economy. Island graduates were assisted in gaining relevant work experience in local firms by the matching of their skills to the appropriate needs of businesses.

Community Development

This project consisted of an organisational review for Age Concern and Playworks to ensure that they can both continue their work to become sustainable entities on the Island.

Strategic planning and efficient delivery of its core service activity is the key for any organisation to achieve sustainability. This is particularly true for organisations that develop in response to need and therefore establish a variety of different projects and service delivery activities.

CVS

The aim of this project was to fund the employment of a full-time CVS (Council for Voluntary Services) Officer at the Rural Community Council in Newport. This position helps to facilitate the further development of the RCC’s role as a Council for Voluntary Services on the Isle of Wight – representing, facilitating and developing the voluntary sector through a variety of mechanisms.

Entrepreneurship for Island Youth

This project was put together to raise awareness of self employment as a career destination for those aged 18 – 30. Schemes include business skills training and personal development in small groups to allow bonding and individual attention from tutors. It is linked to the Princes Youth Business Trust for start up funding and eventually a small business start.

Foyer

The Foyer is an integrated housing and training provision for 45 young people aged 16-25 who are in need of varying levels of support on their way to independent living. Each room in en suite and there is a cyber café to go with the training facilities within the centre. SRB II funding was required in order to start the actual physical building of the Foyer.

Micro-Business Support

This project was designed to support Micro Business on the Island with professional intervention to enable them to grow and expand. Small and Medium sized enterprises with up to 10 employees are given counselling and business advice on a wide range of business issues – finance, marketing, planning etc.

Newport Quay

This project involved the refurbishment and extension of the Quay Arts Centre and the environmental enhancement of the area adjacent to it at Newport Quay, making it a feature attraction for the cultural/heritage tourist market. The upgraded amenities in the Quay Arts Centre were put in place to give additional opportunities for earned income – craft shop, bar, café, meeting rooms, theatre box office etc.

No Limits

This project was designed to provide local young people with the opportunity to gain and develop enterprise skills and translate them into practical projects that reflects both the need and aspirations of the local youth population. A supportive framework means groups of young people research local needs using a variety of methodologies whilst providing them with competencies in all aspects of business planning. Final business cases are submitted to funding sources with some taken on and translated into viable and self-sustaining community/business ventures which will be operationally managed by the young people themselves.
